Our team has prepared an update for the cGIS Pro platform. Now, when you select an object, you can view additional information about it from the linked tables. Examples of such relationships include documents and applications, a list of installed equipment and a list of completed works, performance indicators and telemetry data, as well as other data related to the selected facility.
When working with geographical and spatial data, it is often necessary to associate the geometry of an object with its attributes or additional information in the form of a list of data. However, all of them can be stored in different tables or obtained from various external systems. The main advantages of this approach are:
Flexibility of the data structure. Dividing information into tables allows you to manage it more efficiently. For example, you can change attribute information without having to modify spatial data.
Scalability. If necessary, you can add new attributes or change the data structure of related tables without rebuilding the entire database. This is especially important for large projects with ever-growing amounts of information.
Efficiency. Separate storage of geometry and attributes allows you to optimize data queries, speeding up the system.
Centralized management. Changes made to linked tables are automatically reflected in all linked objects, which ensures that the data is up-to-date.
How to ensure communication between the data? To build relationships, foreign keys are used - special fields in additional database tables that refer to the primary key of the record in the main table. The associated data is configured via the cGIS Pro Administration Console.
The setup process includes the following steps:
1. Defining the primary key in the main object table.
2. Create a foreign key field in the linked tables.
3. Setting up the type of communication (one-to-one, one-to-many).
4. Defining rules for displaying related data in the interface.
Separating geometry and attributes into different tables and using foreign keys to communicate between them is a powerful tool for working with spatial data. This opens up new possibilities for displaying information related to an object when solving a variety of applied tasks.
